The other day I was adding some quotes to one of my collections and I came across some Quotes that i had forgotten that I had, which by the way would have been uselful for another assignment that I had worked on the other day.
They all dealt with Family History, and I thought that I would share them here. Being a family historian myself I find these very applicable. To start us off here is a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson.
“Every book is a quotation; and every house is a quotation out of all forests, and mines, and stone quarries; and every man is a quotation from all his ancestors.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
To me this quote says that we are who we are because of who our parents & grandparents, etc, are, in other words if you want to know why you have certain looks and or health issues, look at the lives of your ancestors for the answers. Our next quote also emphasises that while also infering that we will pass on the same things plus more to our own descendants. It comes from a gentleman by the name of Edward Selner.
“We inherit from our ancestors gifts so often taken for granted. Each of us contains within this inheritance of soul. We are links between the ages, containing past and present expectations, sacred memories and future promise.”
The following quote illustrates one reason why we do Family History. It comes in the form of a chinese proverb.
“To forget one’s ancestors is to be a brook without a source, a tree without a root.”
To close off our quotes for today I have included a quote from Jeremy Hardy which illustrates one the more facinating aspects of doing Family History.
“The thing that interests me most about family history is the gap between the things we think we know about our families and the realities.”
Thats all from me for now, so i hope you find these quotes useful and informative. have fun, till next time.
